The latest resized pattern is the Yoyo Top & Elena Skirt, in this video I am making up the top. It’s a simple shell top, perfect for layering in winter or easy wearing in summer.
Like with most of the patterns I make I try to create simple shapes that are easy to adapt and hack. Make it up in a fabric that suits you, add length, trims, or ruffles with ease.
In this video I make a winter version in a tweed fabric, this midweight and relatively open weave is what this pattern was originally designed for. I love wearing it on its own with jeans in warmer weather or with a turtleneck in winter. On both winter versions I’ve made I’ve left the hem raw with just a piece of trim stopping the frayed edge. I feel this adds a more casual look to the top and I’m a sucker for added details and texture like this.
As mentioned above this top is also great for summer, I’ve made it up in a couple of linens for a really easy throw-on top for summer. Because of the loose shape it’s breezy and great with shorts and skirts. In this circle pattern I even added little cutouts for a fun way to get sunburnt (yes that actually happened), but it is a fun way to utilize the pattern and add extra detail – I’ve saved the details on how I made it to my Instagram highlights. The other linen version I made up is a hot pink gingham which I added a small row of lace too, I love adding little trims like this as I think it makes the top a little more unique without affecting the simple silhouette.
Because of the simple shape of this pattern it is super simple to lengthen, just follow the side seams down to the length you desire. With the green dress below I also cut a couple of rectangle strips to add a ruffled edge along the bottom, and for both I added pockets to the side seams by tracing a vague pocket shape around my phone.
I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do, if you do make up your own Yoyo Top please tag us on Instagram and use #VDBYoyo
I am aiming to get the skirt sew-along video up soon so keep your eyes peeled for that!
